Portland Hospital W1W 5AH
Map
This is the only private hospital for women and children in the UK. About 2000 births take place there per year. Facilities include a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), resident Consultant Anaesthetists, a resident junior Paediatrician and a resident junior Obstetrician.
There is an operating theatre on the Labour Ward where emergency Caesarean sections take place, in addition to the main operating theatres for elective surgery. There is a maternal high dependency area on the Labour Ward.
There is no adult Intensive Care Unit, the reason being that it is rare to need such facility in the selected group of pregnant women who have their baby in this hospital. For women with known very high-risk pregnancies it is advisable to have their baby delivered in a big general NHS hospital.

Hospital of St John & Elizabeth NW8 9NH
Map
The Birth Unit at St John & Elizabeth was set up to care for selected low-risk pregnancies. About 500 births take place per year. It has a very pleasant, 'low-tech' environment with an emphasis on alternative therapies. Anaesthetists are available for epidural insertions, and also Caesarean sections.
There are strict selection criteria and you must be judged to be low risk to book there. There is no neonatal unit or resident Paediatricians, and babies born with significant unexpected problems will need to be transferred out, either to an NHS unit or to the Portland Hospital.
