Fetal viability scan 6-10 weeks
This is an ultrasound examination that is usually carried out vaginally (at 6-7 weeks) or abdominally (at 8-10 weeks).

It aims to determine:
  • The viability of the embryo
  • The number of fetuses present
  • Whether the pregnancy is inside the uterine cavity (and not an ectopic pregnancy in the tube)
This scan is useful for:
  • Women who are experiencing pain or bleeding in the pregnancy
  • Women who have had previous miscarriages
  • Previous ectopic pregnancies
  • Women over the age of 35 who have a high risk of miscarriage
  • Excessive sickness in the pregnancy
