Fetal viability scan 6-10 weeks
This is an ultrasound examination that is usually carried out vaginally (at 6-7 weeks) or abdominally (at 8-10 weeks).
It aims to determine:
- The viability of the embryo
- The number of fetuses present
- Whether the pregnancy is inside the uterine cavity (and not an ectopic pregnancy in the tube)
This scan is useful for:
- Women who are experiencing pain or bleeding in the pregnancy
- Women who have had previous miscarriages
- Previous ectopic pregnancies
- Women over the age of 35 who have a high risk of miscarriage
- Excessive sickness in the pregnancy
